Description:	Yoshioka Futaba has a few reasons why she wants to "reset" her image and life as a new high-school student. Because she's cute, she was ostracized by her female friends in junior high, and because of a misunderstanding, she couldn't get her feeling across to the one boy she has always liked, Tanaka-kun. Now in high school, she is determined to be as unladylike as possible so that her friends won't be jealous of her. While living her life this way contentedly, she meets Tanaka-kun again, but he now goes under the name of Mabuchi Kou. He tells her that he felt the same way as she did when they were younger, but now things can never be the same again. Probably the most infuriating arc I've ever seen in an otherwise high-quality manga. Why introduce a rival for each character if they're both going to be shitty or boring? Why make the drama hinge on the fact that the protagonists, who have been open and direct with eachother for the entire first half, suddenly lose their ability to communicate? Why separate the main couple using this contrivance for so long when one of the main strength's of the manga was their banter?

I enjoyed this manga overall but holey fucking moley, the worst use of rivals I've ever seen in a good shoujo.

this feels weird reading the ending. It's not bad. The beginning had more gushy mushy "YOU BETTER FEEL IT" feeling in it. The ending feels gently sweet and conclusive.

WTF? Then it gets all awkward and weird and I have to wait 30 FRIGGIN' CHAPTERS FOR THE MAIN CHARACTERS TO EVEN BE TOGETHER??? And then it's the END? AAAAAAAAAAAH hat a waste of time. Other than that, some mature action on the part of the heroine, who's still pretty forward and expresses herself quite clearly. That was refreshing. What a shame though that it got so awkward afterwards.

EXTREMELY LONG comparison of the manga, anime, and live action film (spoiler central so only read if you've seen all three/ don't mind having things spoiled for you)

They all had things they did really well, and by the same token, they all had certain elements that I could've done without. I wouldn't say any of them were perfect masterpieces, but I do like the manga the best of all of them since I feel it has the complete story of Futaba and Kou's romance.

Manga

-PRO: Complete story of Futaba and Kou's romance, from middle school days --> reunion --> them falling in love again --> them actually getting together, with all the major events of their relationship, and all the subtle nuances that I feel are just as important

-Ties up most loose ends. Like Murao's crush on Tanaka-sensei, Kominato's love for Murao (which becomes requited!!!), and even Makita getting over Kou and starting her own relationship.

- CON: Introduction of rivals Narumi and Touma. I honestly could've done without them and the added drama they brought. I mean I enjoyed scenes where Kou was all "I'm going to win her back", but I really hated Narumi's manipulative personality, and I found Touma's "Let's ask her out when she's still vulnerable from being rejected and still in love with another guy" thing suuuuuuper problematic. And the fact that his friend Shun called Futaba a b*tch really grated on me. Like HELLO, it's your friend's stupid fault for asking out a girl who's still working out her feelings for another guy. Being a good friend doesn't mean you badmouth people who could hurt your friend, it means recognizing when your friend has made a bad fucking decision, but also realizing it was his fucking choice to. Don't take it out on people who are just as affected by said decision.

(That being said, Touma was surprisingly mature in his role as the love rival. He had many good lines and he didn't blame Futaba for how she felt. He was fascinated with the Futaba that was in love with Kou, after all. Guess he just wanted to see if he could make her direct all that attention and emotion towards him. Still, I'm not condoning his actions, I just think he has some redeeming qualities. Narumi on the other hand...)

Anime:

-PRO: Animation quality was consistently awesome and true to the mangaka's art style. Music and soundtrack was good and fit the scenes well.

-Stayed pretty close to the manga, just stopped way before the introduction of the rivals. WHICH MAKES THIS SO MUCH BETTER. It means the themes of this anime were mainly true friendship, the fumbling and innocence you can only find with first loves, and what it means to lose someone and work through your grief afterwards. Particularly recommend ep. 11 because it was a very important scene in the manga and they made it the emotionally-charged climatic scene it needed to be.

-CON: Excluded some development and background info, but understandable since they were trying to fit everything into 12 episodes.

Live Action Film:

-PRO: Beautifully shot. Cast portrayed characters well and acting was on point.

-Main couple had chemistry. Film made sure to include a lot of the moments fans would be looking for, and even some new ones that were just as squeal-worthy. The scene where he watches Futaba sleep replaces the table scene, but it was cute.

-I liked Narumi a lot more in this adaption. It wasn't that they made me more sympathetic to her plight, but she wasn't as blatantly manipulative in this one. And in the ending scenes she basically told Futaba that only she could "restart Kou's time." So yeah, this adaption made her much easier to stomach. Also love the actress' Nagasaki accent. A little thing, but I enjoyed hearing it.

-Touma was also really good here. Didn't have as many scenes as the manga, but he still had many opportunities to showcase the smooth lines his character is known for.

-Kominato was really enjoyable to watch here! Not just for comic relief either. Often times he was acting as a voice piece for the audience, calling Kou an idiot and giving him some sage advice. The actor did a good job because I think he was the most in character out of all of them.

-CON: I feel like you definitely have to have read the manga and/or watched the anime in order to get the full Ao Haru Ride experience when watching the live action. It still adds an extra dimension to it all and I like the different take on the scenes we all know and love, however.

-Futaba and Kou didn't bicker as much here and I feel like bickering really defines their relationship.

-They cut the 'Futaba dragging Kou home from nighttime excursions' scenes a lot.

-The training camp scenes were also cut a bunch. Which I think is a shame since it really laid the foundation for the group's friendship. Here Kou and Kominato were already friends so it was easier for the group to form.

-Makita's role is very small here. SUPER SMALL. And the whole drama with her and Futaba liking the same guy is cut very short because her confession to him happens off-screen.

Differences that aren't super pro or con in my book:

-Futaba here is a bit less gung-ho and plucky. In my head canon I feel like the Futaba here is a bit closer to her middle school self. She's quieter here, but she's definitely still as strong and determined as her manga version.

If any of you are confused about why I ranked the manga first when I had so many more negative things to say about in comparison to the other two, the anime was a bit short for me and I was searching for the added development the manga provided, and the live action diverged a lot from the manga. I enjoyed the creative choices they made, but I wouldn't consider them a replacement for canon manga events.

I agree with this.

I liked the overall story just a lot more of Strobe edge.

For me one of the key things about Strobe Edge was outside of the story (which is unusual for me). There was often something about the combination of art, sound effects, and sort of basic, sensory mental dialogue that made the MC's emotions punch me in the gut, just come out of the page, bypass my mind and impact. It seemed to bring me the physical state she was in from her feelings, making the experience raw and strong. Another mangaka handling the exact same scenes, maybe even with more sophistication, might have had a tepid result. That wasn't there so much in this one.

I don't really understand the reason behind its popularity either (maybe its because of the author's previous works?), but I wouldn't call it a very very bad ride.

Also, I'm pretty sure plenty of readers here are male.

I was confused by the new chapter (49.5) since the story is over, but in case anyone else was wondering, it's just a cute little several-page extra featuring the main couple of Aoharu alongside the main couple of Strobe Edge.

Well, nice fluffy ending, and I think overall pretty good. I don't think this hit the heartbeat-o-meter as hard as Strobe Edge, but good nonetheless.

I agree with this.

I liked the overall story just a lot more of Strobe edge.

While I do have more connection with Kou character, since my mom also died young, so I kinda understood his point of view. I liked that part of the story the most, how Kou grow in this story. While I didn't like all the things he did, I can at least understand his reasons.

All in all nice story, do hope the next story will capture me more like Strobe Edge did.

No se, me cae mal Futaba diciendo que "cargara con la culpa de su desiciòn" como haciendose la mártir cuando el que en realidad sufrió fue mi bebe Touma. Pero bue. :v Ese era el final que debía ser, supongo...
